Join us for an Intermediate Sashiko Design Workshop, taught by Ari Irving of Crane Wife Studio! We’ll take your stitching skills to the next level using this traditional Japanese technique! In this one-day session, you’ll learn to create and stitch a beautiful Sashiko design onto a Noren—a traditional Japanese fabric divider often used as a decorative doorway curtain. We’ll guide you through planning and transferring intricate patterns, perfecting your stitching technique, and exploring creative ways to incorporate texture and flow into your design.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a stunning, hand-stitched Noren to display in your home or workspace. Perfect for those with basic Sashiko experience who are ready to dive deeper! Sashiko is a technique that uses a running stitch to reinforce or decorate cloth. The name literally translates to "little stabs". Originating around 400 years ago in rural northern Japan. It was a way to keep warm and preserve clothing in harsh winters. Women would often stitch sashiko on dark evenings so they could see what they were doing. Sashiko is traditionally made with white cotton thread on indigo blue cloth, but decorative items may use red thread. The classic "cream on blue" look is achieved by stitching geometric patterns in undyed thread.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
• Sashiko History & Use of Norens
• Designing and transferring pattern
• Completing a Noren project (Noren will be presewn for time purposes)
